AMMB Holdings Berhad (“AMMB”) has obtained the approval of Bank Negara Malaysia for AMMB to commence negotiations with Friends Life FPL Limited (“Friends Life”) for the proposed repurchase of the 30% equity interest held by Friends Life in the two joint ventures, namely, AmLife Insurance Berhad (“AmLife”) and AmFamily Takaful Berhad (“AmTakaful”) (the “Proposal”). The Proposal would allow both AMMB and Friends Life to pursue separate strategies to enhance their respective businesses and enable AMMB to focus on opportunities unique to its business model. Notwithstanding this, Friends Life will continue to provide technical support to AmLife and AmTakaful over an agreed period of time. Friends Life’s joint venture partnership with AMMB in AmLife commenced in December 2008 with the acquisition of a 30% shareholding in AmLife. �The joint venture subsequently extended to family Takaful in December 2011 with a further investment by Friends Life in a 30% stake in AmTakaful. Definitive agreement for the Proposal may only be signed with the prior approval of the Minister of Finance. Further announcement on the Proposal will be made at the appropriate time. | ||
