Contents: As announced by Bank Negara Malaysia ("BNM") on 1 September 2010, the Board of Directors of AMMB Holdings Berhad ("AHB") is pleased to inform that AHB has received approval for the joint application with Friends Provident Group plc ("FP Group"), AHB's joint venture partner in the life insurance business of AmLife Insurance Berhad ("AmLife"), for a new family takaful licence under the Takaful Act 1984.
The family takaful business will be undertaken under a new company to be established, tentatively to be named as AmTakaful Berhad. Similarly to the joint venture in AmLife, "AmTakaful" will be held by:-
(1) AHB, through its wholly-owned insurance holding company AMAB Holdings Sdn Bhd with a 70% equity interest; and
(2) FP Group, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Friends Provident Ltd with the remaining 30% equity interest.
To be initially capitalised at RM100 million, the family takaful business of "AmTakaful" is expected to commence operation during the second quarter of 2011.
With an active and significant participation in Islamic finance and to further consolidate its role as a leading Islamic financial services provider, the approval for the family takaful licence will greatly enhance AHB Group's existing Islamic finance activities and widen its insurance services to provide financial solutions across all levels of the Malaysian society.
AHB Group's joint venture partner, FP Group, has a long history of involvement in life insurance, since its founding in 1832. It has two (2) main areas of operations (the UK and international), with its UK business having some 2.5 million customers, making it one of the top ten (10) operations. Internationally, FP Group's business activities cover four (4) key regions including Asia and the Middle East. FP Group has had insurance operations in Asia for over 20 years.
As it is expected to commence operation during the second quarter of 2011, the new family takaful business will not have any effect on the consolidated earnings or net assets of AHB for the year ending 31 March 2011.
